    The Deadline

It sounds like the rehash version of William Shakespeare’s “The Taming of the Shrew” where the main girl must marry first before her younger sister can. It’s a romantic comedy. The same concept goes for Noon Woranuch and Vee Veeraphap’s upcoming lakorn “Sentai…Salai Soht (A deadline….to end being single)” for Ch7. Noon is playing a woman by the name of “Fah”, she has a younger sister who wants to get marry, but the main rule in their family is that Fah (being the eldest sister) must marry first before her younger sister can. Fah also has a pestering mother who badly wants her to get marry. Her mother even resorts to trickrey in order to do so, she lies to Fah that she dying and begged Fah to find a husband within 2 months. For the sake of her ‘ailing’ mother, Fah uses her talent as the head of the creative department in her company to find a husband. You can guess that Vee is playing the guy that Noon must snatch up to marry.

    Two Worlds

Tawee Pope is famous. It is many people’s favorite lakorn. Every ‘older’ avid lakorn watcher knows of it. A present-day modernist nang’ek time-travels via a mirror to the past to meet old-fashy pra’ek. I myself have watched a bit of the 1994 original but do not recall anything of it aside from what I summarized in the sentence before. Therefore, I am unable to review Tawee Pope in comparison to its predecessor. When news came out of its remake, I was thrilled at the general storyline of “two worlds” bringing together two soul mates [more because of Om!], then disappointed that Pancake was the nang’ek, and as I watched it, I clearly became disappointed. Fans bashed the remake calling it an epic failure. I agree. Godninja boldy rates Tawee Pope with 2 stars.

Since Tawee Pope lacked in the goodness department, I must mention my top five scenes: 1. [Scenes in this case] Whenever Khun Luang managed to crack smile or roll his eyes. If not for you, I would have been long gone. 2. Khun Luang (or was it Manee?) meekly confessed he likes her and they held hands. Such a little thing, but it was so cute. At this point, I was just begging for any hint of romance! 3. Khun Laung hugged Manee back when the mirror called her to return. After the first time, he was a selfish bastard. 4. Om Akapan took off this shirt for me! This was when Khun Luang had a brawl showdown with Arnus [don’t recall this character name] as a diversion to get the letter. 5. The morning after ending of course! Pixs on top. So freaking jealous!

I think that is all the nice stuff I can say about Tawee Pope, so there comes the hating. Number one thing that this lakorn killed was…it’s whole purpose. And if you don’t have a purpose, then you automatically fail. Simple as that. There was no significance to the time-traveling. There was no focus on the historical events which I thought was the point of Tawee Pope. The idea of Manee as a weapon of trickery to coax intelligence from the foreigners had so many possibility of epic plotline. Even though she manged to extract the ‘valuable’ info, they never showed how it was significant. Perhaps how it was used to counteract the imperialism or anything, really!

Few more notable things to diss: Though according to character, Pancake over-acted, and even my Om bored me. You can’t be handsome forever, baby; I need some facial expressions. I wanted to rip off my laptop screen at the immense stupidity of Manee and the mirror. Mirror mirror on the wall, why can you let Manee bring in electric shavers but not a book. You want her to changed history, but you also limit her. This is the paradigm of time-traveling. And Manee, if you couldn’t bring the one important book, why the heck didn’t you just read it and remember it. I thought you were smart? Oh, I can’t forget the lack of romance. You made me angry too many times.

Enough, I will only complain on one more point-the ending. Apparently in the original, the mom and the friends were able to come to the past. Okay, in this one, the mom appeared in the past, but she did nothing. Where’s the logic in that? What I would have loved was a little family tree or something at the end to know how their life went. How many kids they had, going to grandkids and so on the to present…then [I’m really am wishing too hard] goes to a single great great (whatever how many great) granddaughter. And then flash, we see Kul, Tron, and Raiwat meeting a descendent of Manee and Khun Luang. And because I felt so bad for Raiwat at the ending, he should get their descendent. Now this would have made up for all of the disappointments.

Nang’ek played by “Poo” Praiya Suandokmai is an out of luck, poor, orphan girl raised by her money-hungry foster mom (Apiradee Pawaputanon), who has a spoiled brat daughter played by “Mint” Nawinda Bertotti. Her foster mom also has a no-good, rapist wannabe boyfriend played by Tharathip Seehadetrungchai (yea, I don’t know who that is), who on occasion will try to assault our nang’ek Rasa.

Our nang’ek is the ultimate “nangfah (angel)”, she is a diligent worker–values education, values hard-work, kind to others, innocent, virginal, not too shabby on the eyes. Though they treat her as an ATM machine, she refuses to abandon her makeshift, foster family because she feels indebted to them. Soon after her mother passed away so did her father, her foster mother took her in when she had no one to turn to. She feels a moral obligation to her evil foster mom who on many occasions will abuse and take advantage of her. Essentially our nang’ek will be a weak, kindhearted, idiot with spunk.

As for our pra’ek Akrin, played by ‘Stefan’ Tasit Sinkanawiwat, he is described as a good-looking, rich playboy with charm. He is a heir to a well-known fitness complex called M Fitness. Akrin sees women has a plaything and love as a game. His grandfather Amnat (Khun Suchao Pongwilai) is fed up with his immature, careless, insincere lifestyle and wants him to get married. If he doesn’t get marry by a certain time, he won’t inherit M Fitness. It will be given to his competitive sister Ornuma (Prae Amery) who also has to get marry if she wants to inherit the family business.

As the the marriage deadline slowly approaches and he doesn’t like any of his potential brides, Akrin decides to hire someone as his bride. He hires Rasa, the girl he likes and the only girl in Thailand who has the audacity to reject him every time he makes a move on her. Their marriage will be a sham, it will be for on year and he will pay her 2 million baht ($66,766 USD) total. He will give her 1 million baht at the beginning of their marriage and 1 million baht at the end of their marriage. Rasa accept his offer because she needs the money. Around that time, her foster mother finds herself in the hospital and needs immediate surgery. Thus this is how their life together begins through a fake marriage.

Nong Sai loved and adored Pada like a hero. Though he went to study aboard for 10 years, her feelings for him never faltered. She never forgot and waited for him to return. Even when a young flight officer Samit Kanjonrat (”TengNeung” Kritnagan Maneepagaphan) fell in love with her, she rejected him to remain true to Pada.

Seeing his daughter wait and long for Pada, Khun Win Sinwit remembered an agreement he had with General Pat to have Nong Sai and Pada wed to erase a 80 million baht (2.5 million USD) debt owed by General Pat to Khun Win. Khun Ying Amporn, Pada’s mother, was very worried about this debt. She feared losing her house, losing her fortune, so she ordered her son Pada to come back and marry Nong Sai immediately. One problem, Pada is already married to Chomphilai (”Yok” Thanyakan Thongitthananon).

When Khun Win announces he is ill and only had 1 year to live, Khun Ying Amporn uses this opportunity as a bargaining point to beg Chomphilai to divorce Pada for just one year. If not, Pada will lose his entire fortune, so Chomphilai agreed to divorce Pada.

After Pada and Nong Sai wed, Pada takes good care of Nong Sai. However, he does not touch her. When she finds a good man who will love her truly, he vows to divorce her.

In the marriage, Nong Sai had to endure many things– ill-treatment from Khun Ying Amporn and bullying from Chomphilai. Gradually, Pada began to feel the love and concern Nong Sai had for him, he is shaken by it and too started to develop feelings for her. When Chomphilai notices this, she sent her older brother Chalermchai (”Nam” Rapeepat Akekapunkul) to her pursue Nong Sai to make her lose her way.

Nong Sai leaves Pada’s house after they argued and she felt betrayed by him. So, Khun Win sent Nong Sai to receive treatment aboard. Gradually she got better and learned to walk. Khun Ying Amporn was livid when she learned she had been deceived, she ordered her son Pada to divorce Nong Sai right away, but he refused giving his mother the excuse that he wanted to keep the promise he gave to Khun Win. Truthfully, it was a cover, Pada had fallen in love with Nong Sai and he did not want to lose her.

As Pada became more interested, more engrossed with Nong Sai, it caused Chomphilai to stray. She started seeing her ex-hubby/ex-boyfriend Boontheert. They began to have a sexual affair and there is a sex tape to prove that they did.

Throughout his marriage to Nong Sai, Khun Ying Amporn reminded Pada that he has Chomphilai, she loves him dearly and he should not think too much of Nong Sai. Hearing this from this mother constantly , Pada made the decision to end it with Nong Sai and get back with Chomphilai after she tells him that she is pregnant with his child.

With Nong Sai, when she learned that Pada was once married to Chomphilai and they divorced because of her, she was devastated and asked Pada for a divorce to which he agreed.

After the divorce, Nong Sai moved back to her house at the farm. She agreed to marry Smith Kanjonrat to forget about Pada.

Soon after, Pada breaks up with Chomphilai when he learned that she had a sexual affair with her ex-boyfriend Boontheert. Chomphilai blamed her break up with Pada on Nong Sai instead of herself and ordered her brother Chalermchai to kill Nong Sai. When Pada learned of their plans, he goes to find Nong Sai to save her, to protect her.
