    Comedy Lab

    Comedy Lab is a British television series which showcases pilots of experimental comedy shows. Series have been aired irregularly on Channel 4 and E4 since 1998.

    Several pilots first shown on Comedy Lab have gone on to spawn full series, most notably Trigger Happy TV, Fonejacker, That Peter Kay Thing, Meet the Magoons and FM. It also gave Jimmy Carr his first television appearance in Jimmy Carr’s World of…Corporate Videos.

    The 2001 series features the episodes Knife and Wife, Orcadia, Daydream Believers: Brand New Beamer and Jimmy Carr’s World of…Corporate Videos featuring Jimmy Carr.

    The 2008 series features the episodes Headwreckers, Mr and Mrs Fandango, Olivia Lee’s Naughty Bits, Karl Pilkington: Satisfied Fool, Pappy’s Fun Club, School of Comedy and Slaterwood.

    2010’s shows are iCandy, Happy Finish, Penelope Princess of Pets, Jack Whitehall Secret Census, Filth, Moviemash and Hung Out.

    The 2011 lineup includes: Anna & Katy, Totally Tom and Rick and Peter.

    Modern Toss

    Modern Toss is a partly animated British comedy programme based on characters from Modern Toss, the creation of British comedy writers and cartoonists Jon Link and Mick Bunnage. Renowned for their scurrilous humour and highly stylised animation, it was created in 2004, initially as a website publishing single panel jokes and then as series of irregularly released comics.

    The initial pilot programme was commissioned by Channel 4 as part of their Comedy Lab series and Broadcast in May, 2005. Series one was first broadcast in July 2006. Following the DVD release of the first series in November 2007, a second series began on 23 January 2008.

    The show was aired on the Independent Film Channel in the United States and in 30+ territories including Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Russia, Poland, Finland, Ukraine, Italy, Mexico, Norway, Sweden, Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia, Montenegro, Bosnia Herzegovina, Macedonia, Philippines, Bulgaria, Finland, Iceland and the African territories reached by MNet. The series last played in the United Kingdom on 4Music in 2011 and the pilot episode received an airing on Channel 4 in August 2012.

The show is based on statistics and opinion polls, and draws on polls produced by a variety of organizations and new polls commissioned for the programme, carried out by company Harris Poll. The show’s title is derived from a well-known advertising tagline for Whiskas cat food, which originally claimed that “8 out of 10 cats prefer Whiskas”.

    Queer as Folk

    Queer as Folk is a 1999 British television series that chronicles the lives of three gay men living in Manchester’s gay village around Canal Street. Both Queer as Folk and Queer as Folk 2 were written by Russell T Davies. The first series was re-shown on More 4 between 14 and 18 October 2007, as part of Channel 4’s 25th-birthday celebrations.

    Queer as Folk was produced by the Red Production Company for Channel 4. The title of the programme comes from a dialect expression from some parts of Northern England, “there’s nowt so queer as folk”, meaning “there’s nothing as strange as people”; which is a word play the modern day English synonym of “queer”, meaning homosexual. Davies had originally titled the series this, although at the suggestion of Channel 4 executives for a period during its development and pre-production it was known as Queer as Fuck, before it reverted to the former name.
