After a series of dizzying comic complications, she successfully poses as the long-lost daughter of millionaire Cornelius Burden (Walter Brennan). Meanwhile, poor Bob, held responsible for Peggy’s “death,” comes to town determined to clear his name by exposing Peggy as an impostor.

Charlie, a shady, odd character who may or may not know something about what really happened, hangs around the courtroom and jail making rude comments and noises. After Helen is acquitted, he tries to blackmail them.

His leg is amputated, and during his recovery in Appleborro, the town’s influence causes him to reform.
