I Went Down (1997)

Fresh out of prison, Git rescues a former best friend (now living with Git’s girlfriend) from a beating at the hands of loan sharks. He’s now in trouble with the mob boss, Tom French, who sends Git to Cork with another debtor, Bunny Kelly, to find a guy named Frank Grogan, and take him to a man with a friendly face at a shack across a bog. It’s a tougher assignment than it seems: Git’s a novice, Bunny’s prone to rash acts, Frank doesn’t want to be found (and once he’s found, he has no money), and maybe Tom’s planning to murder Frank, which puts Git in a moral dilemma. Ballykissangel is a BBC television drama set in Ireland, produced in-house by BBC Northern Ireland. The original story revolved around a young English Roman Catholic priest as he became part of a rural community. It ran for six series, which were first broadcast on BBC One in the United Kingdom from 1996 to 2001. It aired in Ireland on RTÉ One and in Australia on ABC TV from 1996 to 2001. Reruns currently air on Yesterday in the United Kingdom and in the United States on some PBS affiliates.

Significant changes in the cast occurred between the third and fourth series and between the fifth and sixth series.

There was a surprised reaction from both the cast and press when it was announced that Ballykissangel was to end. Several articles at the time of the show’s cancellation stated that a seventh series had been written and the cast were due to start filming in May 2001. Following the cancellation a seventh series was never put into production.

The name of the fictional village in which the show was set is derived from Ballykissane, a townland near Killorglin in County Kerry, where the show’s creator, Kieran Prendiville, holidayed with his family as a child. The village’s name in Irish is shown as “Baile Coisc Aingeal”, which means “The town of the fallen angel” on the sign outside the post office.

The Aphrodite Inheritance

The Aphrodite Inheritance is a television production made by the BBC in 1978 and which aired in 1979.

The eight-part serial, written by Michael J. Bird, was a follow-up to the success of his previous two Mediterranean-set series The Lotus Eaters and Who Pays the Ferryman?. Whereas the two previous productions had been set and filmed in Crete, the action in The Aphrodite Inheritance took place in Cyprus.

The series starred Peter McEnery as a man visiting Cyprus to investigate the death of his brother and subsequently being drawn into a strange conspiracy, with the narrative twists of the serial employing various supernatural and mythological motifs. Other major cast members included Alexandra Bastedo, Brian Blessed, Paul Maxwell and Stefan Gryff.
