Generator Gawl is a 1998 12-part anime series. The story is set in 2007, when Professor Takuma Nekasa uncovers a gene code that will unlock the human body’s greatest mystery and expose mankind to its greatest threat. As a result, Gawl, Koji, and Ryo—three young scientists from a future period—have traveled back in time to undo this mistake. Though the trio intended to arrive one year before the calamity, they are instead transported three months prior to the event. In their effort to save the world, they are opposed by the mysterious and cunning Ryuko Saito, a scientist who prefers the future as it is. Saito is assisted by Generators, unearthly assassins posing as humans. As Ryo and Koji try to complete their mission, Gawl himself must “generate”—becoming like his enemies to fight on their terms.
Colorful is a manga by Torajirō Kishi which was adapted into a 16-episode anime series. The episodes are composed of vignettes typically involving men and teenage boys attempting to catch a glimpse of women’s panties and/or look down their blouses. The episodes are fast-paced, experimental in animation and sound and music, manic and very short, about seven minutes each, and filled with comedy. The show is rather ambiguous as to whether it supports the fetishes it deals with or not. The perpetrators within the show usually fail at their attempt to catch a glimpse, get caught in the act, or suffer Karmic retribution.
Anime fanatics tend to either love or hate the series as it is considered either wildly funny, or tasteless and depraved. Colorful shares similarities with Golden Boy in several ways: most notably the inclusion of one of the characters acting the bizarre toilet fetish of Kintaro Oe in one of the episodes.
The opening theme is “Boku no Taion wa 37.5 C.” by Yūko Miyamura.
The English DVD was released on March 18, 2003 and was distributed by A.D. Vision. Some puns were left out of this dub, but were included in A.D.V. subtitles. One such pun involves Steve referring to his panties shots as “Japan’s exotic upside-down Fuji”.
Uta∽Kata is a 2004 anime TV series. Written differently, the title can also refer to bubbles, which is used as such in the ending theme.
The series can be loosely considered a magical girl story. However, this series deviates from more conventional magical girl themes in that it addresses topics that are for a more mature audience, such as child abuse, eating disorders, and possibly misanthropy. Nevertheless, it illustrates the main character’s coming of age with each progressive episode, becoming more and more emotionally intense as the story goes on.
The story follows Ichika Tachibana’s life over a summer holiday when she meets Manatsu Kuroki. The series then details their summer activities and the use of special creatures called Djinn, elemental creatures that lend their powers to Ichika to help her and her friends when they invariably find themselves in danger, and eventually for their own motives.
