    Wives and Daughters

Wives and Daughters is a 1999 four part BBC serial adapted from the novel Wives and Daughters: An Everyday Story by Victorian author Elizabeth Gaskell.

The series was a joint production of the BBC and WGBH Boston, an American public broadcast station and ‘won high audience ratings’ when it first screened in the UK in 1999. Its audience rivalry with an adaptation of Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist, screened on ITV at the same time, was dubbed ‘the battle of the bonnets’. It appeared in the US on BBC America in August 2000 and was later shown on PBS.

It focuses on Molly Gibson, the daughter of the town doctor, and the changes that occur in her life after her widowed father chooses to remarry. The union brings into her once-quiet life an ever-proper stepmother who is ‘too vain and shallow to care for anything beyond her improved social status’. Also a flirtatious stepsister, Cynthia, while a friendship with the local squire brings about an unexpected romance. A New York Times review of the series in 2001 said ‘The entire cast gets the characters right.’

Written by Andrew Davies, produced by Sue Birtwistle and directed by Nicholas Renton, the programme also features Michael Gambon, Penelope Wilton, Bill Paterson and Rosamund Pike.

    Kidnapped

Kidnapped is a two-part BBC television adaptation of the 1893 novel of the same name by Robert Louis Stevenson. The show is directed by Brendan Maher and stars James Anthony Pearson as Davie Balfour and Iain Glen as Alan Breck.

Attempting to claim his rightful inheritance from his eccentric Uncle Ebenezer, young Davie Balfour is kidnapped and imprisoned in the hold of a slave ship bound for the New World. Soon, Davie joins forces with exiled Highland hero Alan Breck and together, the unlikely pair of outlaw and innocent embark on a treacherous quest across Scotland that will bring them foes too numerous to count, as well as unexpected friends.

Among the plot deviations from novel to movie:

⁕The movie added a love interest for Davie in Catriona, the daughter of James of the Glen. This plot element is from the sequel novel, Catriona.

⁕In the novel, Breck and James of the Glen were never arrested by the British; but the movie showed James of the Glen being falsely arrested with the threat of being hanged to force Breck to give himself up.

⁕The movie added the “Long Mile Gang”, expert trackers, to track Davie and Breck across Scotland, but the novel only had British troops.

    Jack Taylor

Jack Taylor is an Irish television drama based on a series of novels by Ken Bruen. Set in Galway, the series stars Iain Glen in the eponymous role of Jack Taylor, a former officer with the Garda Síochána who becomes a “finder” after leaving the service. Taylor is a man who goes looking for clues where others have not bothered to. He also knows the streets of his hometown like the back of his hand.

The series was first broadcast on TV3 in Ireland on 2 August 2010, and subsequently aired on Canvas in Belgium with Dutch subtitles. It received its UK debut on Channel 5 on 21 February 2013. The series has also been made available on DVD. It has received mixed reviews from critics. Bernice Harrison of The Irish Times felt the series was spoiled by Glen’s voiceovers, which gave the character the feel of a gumshoe in a film noir. But David Stephenson of the Daily Express said he had been hooked by the first episode’s strong opening sequence. A real-life private investigator interviewed by The Guardian’s Laura Barnett said that he found the series entertaining, but that it did not always give an accurate portrayal of his profession.
