    Shillingbury Tales

Shillingbury Tales was a British television sitcom comedy-drama series made by ATV for ITV and broadcast 1980-81.

Comprising a single feature length pilot and six one-hour episodes, the series deals with life in an idealised fictional English village and stars Robin Nedwell, Diane Keen, Nigel Lambert, Jack Douglas, John Le Mesurier, Bernard Cribbins and Trevor Howard.

It was preceded by a feature length pilot episode The Shillingbury Blowers starring Trevor Howard, broadcast 6 January 1980

The series was written by Francis Essex and directed by Val Guest. Unusually for a British situation-comedy at that time it was recorded entirely on location on 16mm film and consequently there was no laughter track. Much of the filming took place in the village of Aldbury in Hertfordshire.

The show ended when ATV lost their licence to broadcast and their replacement Central declined to continue production of the series. The series was broadcast in a number of countries around Europe.

    Doctor in the House

Doctor in the House is the American collective name for seven separate British and Australian television comedy series inspired by a series of cinema films, which in turn were based on and inspired by a series of books by Richard Gordon, about the misadventures of a group of medical students — and their later misadventures as doctors.

The first five series, Doctor in the House, Doctor at Large, Doctor in Charge, Doctor at Sea and Doctor on the Go, were produced by London Weekend Television between 1969 and 1977.

The sixth series, Doctor Down Under, which was filmed and based in Australia, was produced by Australia’s Seven Network in 1979-80.

The final series, Doctor at the Top, was produced by the British Broadcasting Corporation in 1991.

The same theme music was played for all of the “Doctor” television series, including the Australian series Doctor Down Under.

    The Lovers

The Lovers is a British television sitcom by Jack Rosenthal, starring Richard Beckinsale and Paula Wilcox as a courting couple, Geoffrey and Beryl. It was made between 1970 and 1971 by Granada Television for the ITV network. The hook for the show was the mismatch between the two, particularly in the area of sex. Beryl was a slightly dizzy character with a penchant for pet names such as “Geoffrey bubbles bonbon”, while Geoffrey, though dreamy, was somewhat rough around the edges, obsessed with taking Beryl to bed. A typical exchange between them might consist of the following:

The series ran for 13 episodes over one year. Like several other British sitcoms of the time, it was used as the basis for a movie in 1973.
