    Azumanga Daioh

    Azumanga Daioh is a Japanese comedy manga by Kiyohiko Azuma. It was serialized by MediaWorks in the shōnen manga magazine Dengeki Daioh from 1999 to 2002 and collected in four bound volumes. In May 2009, in conjunction with the 10th anniversary of the manga, three additional chapters began serialization in Shogakukan’s Monthly Shōnen Sunday under the title Azumanga Daioh: Supplementary Lessons.

    The manga is drawn in a series of vertical four-panel comic strips called yonkoma and depicts the lives of a group of girls during their three years as high-school classmates. The series has been praised for its humor driven by eccentric characters, and Kiyohiko Azuma acclaimed as a “master of the four-panel form,” for both his art style and comic timing.

    It was adapted as an anime television series called Azumanga Daioh: the Animation by J.C.Staff, which aired from the week of April 8, 2002 until the week of September 30, 2002. It was broadcast on the TV Tokyo network and AT-X in five-minute segments every weekday, then rebroadcast as a 25-minute compilation that weekend, for a total of 130 five-minute segments collected in 26 episodes. The compilation episodes were released on DVD and Universal Media Discs by Starchild Records; the five-minute segments can be distinguished by their individual titles. Several soundtrack albums were released, as well as three Azumanga Daioh video games.

    Ah My Buddha!!

    Ah My Buddha, known in Japan as Amaenaide yo!!, is a mature rated manga by Toshinori Sogabe that was serialised in Comic Gum magazine. An anime adaptation runs on TV Tokyo’s anime satellite channel, AT-X. A second “season” of the manga, named: Amaenaideyo!! MS! was released 3 years later.

    The second season of the anime, Amaenaide yo!! Katsu!!, was shortly released and introduces a new antagonist character, the fifteen-year-old girl, Kazusano Kazuki who is actually very affectionate to Ikkou, unlike the other girls. The second season is also more serious and dramatic than the last one, and focuses more on Hinata’s unstable powers, Haruka’s childhood years and Kazuki’s tricks to get her hand on Ikkou’s powers.

    The show was broadcast in Japan with an R-15 rating, which is the Japanese equivalent of a ‘Restricted’ rating. Media Blasters licensed and released both seasons of the anime in North America under the title Ah My Buddha, first as six single bilingual DVD volumes throughout 2009, and then as a six-DVD collection in April 2010.

    Hunter X Hunter

    Hunter × Hunter is a 1999 television series and is part of the Hunter × Hunter media franchise. The story focuses on a young boy named Gon Freecss, who one day discovers that the father he had always been told was dead is in fact alive and well. He learns that his father, Ging, is a famous “Hunter”: an individual who has proven themself an elite member of humanity. Despite the fact that Ging left his son with his relatives in order to pursue his own dreams, Gon becomes determined to follow in his father’s footsteps, pass the rigorous “Hunter Examination”, and eventually find his father to become a Hunter in his own right.

    Hunter × Hunter was produced by Nippon Animation and directed by Kazuhiro Furuhashi. A total of 62 episodes were broadcast on Fuji Television from October 16, 1999 to March 31, 2001. The series has additionally aired on the satellite television station Animax. Marvelous Entertainment has released all episodes of the series in Japan on DVD in 13 separate volumes between September 20, 2000 and September 19, 2001.

    Viz Media licensed the Hunter × Hunter anime for distribution in the Region 1 market, where it was released across four DVD boxed-sets. The first set was released on December 9, 2008 and the final was released on December 1, 2009. Starting with the second volume, Viz partnered with Warner Home Video in distributing the DVDs. Hunter × Hunter began airing in the United States on the Funimation Channel in the spring of 2009.
