Flagg then takes Mackaye back to town only to find out that he has been “retired”, and when he sees how clueless and incompetent the new marshal and the city fathers are, he persuades Mackaye that it is up to the two of them to stop Waco and his gang from ravaging the town.

When Father John is murdered, the villagers mistakenly think the outlaw is the priest. Alastray at first tells them he is not a priest, but they don’t believe it, and an apparent miracle seems to prove they are correct. Eventually, he assists them in regaining their confidence and defending themselves.

So McDowell heads out alone to face the gang with a load of gunpowder instead of gold and only a few trusted Deputies nearby.
