    Pocket Dragon Adventures

    Pocket Dragon Adventures was a short-lived 1996 syndicated cartoon series, based on the Pocket Dragon character created by artist Real Musgrave, best known from Pocket Dragons figurines also based on his work. The cartoon was about the Pocket Dragons who live with a kindly old wizard, and their many adventures. The series was produced by BKN Entertainment. The show was also produced by D’Ocon Productions and DIC Entertainment. The show first aired in the late-1990s/early-2000s in syndication in the US and about 50 other countries. The series is still playing in some countries, including just having been sold to Russian television in 2008.

    The show itself was created by Craig Miller and Marv Wolfman, who produced and story edited the series. Together or separately, they wrote over 40% of the total number of episodes. Pocket Dragon Adventures was also the very first animated series signed to a labor contract with the Writers Guild of America.

    In some distant future, it’s common knowledge that all wolves have been extinct for 200 years. However, it seems this is false as wolves have not disappeared but rather have taken human form. Kiba, a lone wolf, wanders into a city, trying to sniff out the Lunar Flowers that are supposed to lead whoever follows the scent to paradise. The source of the smell is Cheza, a girl who sleeps in what appears to be suspended animation in a lab. She and the wolves are drawn to each other, and Kiba hopes to find paradise once he finds the source of the scent of Lunar Flowers. However, once Kiba finds Cheza, she is kidnapped by a mysterious person called Darcia, and his search begins anew. Before he leaves the city, he meets 3 other wolves, Tsume, Hige and Toboe. All four wolves have very different personalities and ideas, and their friendliness towards each other is a little rough around the edges. However, they soon band together to continue to search for paradise.

    Tonka acquired the license from Bandai and created a different treatment to the series, plus a short-lived toy line. Spiral Zone is known among fans as a series that stood out from other contemporary cartoons of the 80s because of its dark story. The series has not been officially released on DVD by Hasbro, who had acquired Tonka in the 90s, including all the copyrights to their properties.

The series featured as the first segment of a program called My Little Pony ‘n Friends. The second segment would be an unrelated cartoon based on another Hasbro franchise – including The Glo Friends, MoonDreamers and the Potato Head Kids. The series debuted in September 15, 1986, a few months after the release of My Little Pony: The Movie, and ended in September 23, 1987. Two previous television specials were also edited into segments of My Little Pony ‘n Friends: Rescue from Midnight Castle and Escape from Catrina.

    The complete series of My Little Pony segments have been released on DVD in Regions 1 and 4. As of January 25, 2012, none of the other segments have been released on DVD.

    Gatchaman is a three-part original video animation (OVA) based on the popular 1970s anime Gatchaman. It was released in Japan and the United States during the mid-1990s. This version of Gatchaman is set in the year 2066 where the evil leader of the nation of Hontwall is threatening to take over the planet. Scientists from the International Science Organization are disappearing and only five teenage heroes, the Science Ninja team, can stop the disaster. The OVAs were licensed by Urban Vision through Harmony Gold USA and were released on VHS and DVD. At Anime Boston 2013, Sentai Filmworks had announced that they have rescued the OVA series along with the original 1970’s series for a DVD re-release in October. The series was made available for streaming through Crunchyroll.

    The series was originally dubbed by Harmony Gold and Urban Vision, however, Sentai Filmworks confirmed that the OVAs will be redubbed for their upcoming DVD and Blu-ray re-release to match the uncut TV series dub.
